Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish is a Parish in the Diocese of St. John's - Basseterre.
When Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church was built and opened up for divine worship in 1932, it was considered an out-station of St. Joseph's Parish until 1958. The Church was served from St. John's mainly by Fr. Hermans, C.Ss.R., then Vice-Provincial of the Redemptorist, and also by Frs. V. Vanackere and Lamote.
Tyrells officially became a parish by the appointment of Fr. Thys, C.Ss.R., as the first parish priest.
Fr. Thys was a zealous and energetic pastor. He opened a primary school at Tyrells on 12 January, 1959. Funds for the running of the school were provided by members of the Mill Reef Club. Schooling and lunch were free. Fr. Thys visited his parishioners, whom he also assisted materially.
On 11th October, 1961, Fr. Thys left Antigua for Montserrat. Fr. Eelen, C.Ss.R., was appointed parish priest of Tyrells that very day.
Though a zealous and holy man, Fr. Eelen was not as energetic as Fr. Thys. During his term of office, the Mill Reef Club stopped funding the primary school. The children then had to pay for their lunch. Attendance at school gradually declined until the school was closed. Unlike Fr. Thys, Fr. Eelen could not provide material wealth for his poor parishioners. He was also the opposite of Fr. Thys, in that his health was fragile. He, however, by foot and bicycle, managed to visit all his parishioners. He was responsible for the construction of the beautiful Chapel of Sea View Farm. This 'Chapel of the Good Shepherd' was constructed under the direction of Fr. Joseph Stryckers, C.Ss.R. Fr. Eelen also fixed the arches in the Church at Tyrell's in a way which gave it a local appearance. His health declined, and he resigned in January, 1970.
One might say that his term of office separated those who came into the Church because they were converted from those who came because of what benefits they could get. Those who were converted saw him as a source of great spiritual strength and remained faithful to the Church; the rest stopped attending services or gave up the Church entirely.
With his resignation the Church was once again without a parish priest. The Catholic priests on the island concentrated on St. Joseph's and Tyrell's parish was poorly served. As a result of this, many converts were lost to the Church.
Rev. Fr. Vincent Samuel was appointed the third parish priest of Tyrell's on 15 January, 1972. At the start of his ministry one could see a glorious future for the parish, but as he settled down, things turned out to be the opposite. By the time he was asked to return to his archdiocese of Fort-de-France, Martinique, in August 1974, many more persons were lost to the Catholic Faith.
What are the key tenets of the Catholic faith?
The key tenets of the Catholic faith are found in the Nicene Creed. It says:
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
